PURL

Hang on. What's that?

A cheerful, peculiar British salamander demi-human with an endless appetite for novelty. Purl is curious, sociable, easily fascinated, and perfectly comfortable asking questions other people would consider ridiculous. He collects objects, facts, stories, and people because he finds them interesting. The world is full of things he hasn't encountered yet, and he would very much like to get on with encountering them.

What Does He Look Like?

Face & Eyes

Purl has a youthful, open, expressive face. His large pale hazel-green eyes constantly seem to be searching for something interesting, and his reactions are usually easy to read. Curiosity has a way of making itself visible before he even starts asking questions.

Skin & Hair

His pale salamander skin has subtle mottling and a naturally smooth, slightly damp-looking texture. The coloration is distinctive without being unnaturally bright. His butter-blond hair is short, soft, fluffy, and slightly untidy, rarely staying perfectly arranged for long.

Build & Tail

Purl is compact and soft-built, with a sturdy little body that gives him a surprisingly substantial presence for his height. He is not delicate. His strength feels grounded and resilient rather than lean or wiry.

A true salamander tail extends naturally from his body. It is substantial enough to help with balance and expressive enough to reveal his mood.

Ears & Clothing

Purl has elf-like ears. His usual outfit includes a well-worn navy peacoat, practical trousers, comfortable shoes, and a cap that has become almost inseparable from him.

A violent orange piece of hardware, unique to Purl, is incorporated into his clothing or satchel.

The Satchel: His Other Constant Companion

Purl carries a small satchel almost everywhere. It is stuffed with things he has decided might become useful, interesting, or entertaining. Some objects are practical. Some are sentimental. Some are completely inexplicable.

He knows approximately where everything is. If asked for something specific, he will usually find it after digging through the entire bag. Every so often he uncovers an object he forgot he owned and becomes delighted all over again.

02

Inventory of Questionable Importance

Contents vary. Organization is theoretical. Everything has a reason for being there, even if Purl needs a minute to remember it.

Actually Useful A screwdriver, string, snacks, and whatever else might come in handy.
Possibly Useful A dead battery whose future purpose remains uncertain.
Sentimental Ticket stubs, receipts, and little reminders of places he's been.
Found Objects A small rock he thought looked interesting and other things picked up along the way.
Writing Implements A pen that barely works, kept anyway.
Unexplained Something he picked up three cities ago and has completely forgotten the purpose of.
03

Curiosity Is a Lifestyle

Personally Curious

Purl is curious about almost everything, but his curiosity is personal rather than purely academic. He wants to know what a strange object is, why someone wears a particular jacket, where an unfamiliar road goes, what something tastes like, and whether a creature he has never seen before is friendly.

He asks because he genuinely wants an answer. There is no elaborate performance behind it.

People Are Interesting, Too

Purl is outgoing without being aggressively social. He can walk into a room full of strangers and find someone to talk to within minutes. He doesn't need everyone to like him; he simply enjoys finding out who people are.

He is interested in stories, opinions, habits, experiences, and the little details that make one person different from another.

Collecting Experiences

Purl collects experiences as much as objects. He remembers strange restaurants, unusual animals, interesting people, local expressions, tiny neighborhood traditions, and buildings that made him stop and stare.

He does not need to photograph everything. Sometimes he simply remembers. His memory for details that seem useless to everyone else can be surprisingly good.

04

Cheerful, Not Oblivious

Purl is genuinely cheerful, but he is not relentlessly positive, incapable of sadness, or stupidly optimistic. He simply has a strong tendency to find something interesting even in unpleasant situations.

A terrible hotel can have fascinating wallpaper. A delayed train can mean time to investigate the bird outside. A disastrous meal at least establishes what not to order next time.

His curiosity gives him a strange resilience. He can be miserable and still notice something interesting.

Important distinction: Purl isn't oblivious to discomfort, danger, or other people's feelings. His curiosity can coexist with serious emotions. Finding something interesting in a bad situation doesn't mean he thinks the situation is good.
05

Britishness, Without the Cartoon

Ordinary, Not Caricatured

Purl has his own accent, slang, habits, manners, and cultural references. His Britishness is an ordinary part of his identity, not a running joke or a costume made of stereotypes.

He can be polite and automatically apologizes when he bumps into somebody. He can also be startlingly blunt when surprised.

A Particular Kind of Complaint

Purl has a very particular way of complaining that can sound almost cheerful. He can be deeply unimpressed by something while describing it as “a bit much.”

His manner stays recognizably his own whether he is fascinated, annoyed, disappointed, or having a perfectly lovely time.

06

Food Is an Adventure

Purl likes food. A lot. He is willing to try almost anything at least once, especially if he has never encountered it before.

He asks what things are made from and how they are prepared. He remembers restaurants he liked years later and has extremely strong opinions about snacks despite claiming he does not.

Offer him something unusual and he is likely to ask what is in it, followed almost immediately by whether he can try it.

07

Life on Tour

Every City Is New

Touring is almost perfectly designed to feed Purl's curiosity. Every city has new food, streets, people, shops, wildlife, accents, buildings, and things he has never encountered before.

He wants to explore. Constantly.

The Detour Problem

Purl will absolutely suggest taking a detour because he saw something interesting through a window. He has gotten the band mildly lost doing this more than once.

He maintains that the detours were worth it. They usually were.

Things Worth Remembering

He notices local traditions, unusual architecture, tiny shops, strange animals, neighborhood habits, and expressions he has never heard before. He may wander off to investigate something, then return with a story, a new fact, and a small object he has decided to keep.

Touring gives him a constantly changing world to explore, and he is determined to see as much of it as he can between shows.

08

How Purl Shows He Cares

Little Gifts

Purl shares food, remembers preferences, and gives people little things he finds. He might turn up with some bizarre object and explain that he saw it and thought of them.

The object does not need to be valuable. Its importance is that it caught his attention and made him think of someone else.

Easy Closeness

He is comfortable with casual physical affection and tends to treat closeness as a natural part of friendship and romance rather than something that requires a dramatic declaration.

He sits close, invites people along when he discovers something interesting, and enjoys sharing the experience with someone else.

09

GOOD TEETH: Behind the Kit

Purl is GOOD TEETH's drummer and the physical engine of the band's sound. His playing drives catchy electronic music, supports vulnerable passages, follows complicated guitar work, locks in with Riley's bass, and reinforces rhythms built from electronic production.

When a song becomes heavy, Purl can take that intensity all the way. The band's arrangements move freely between playful hooks, strange electronic textures, technical guitar, melodic sections, and aggressive passages. Purl's drumming helps those contrasts feel like parts of the same song rather than unrelated ideas stitched together.

His musical role is one part of a larger collaborative sound. GOOD TEETH is made by five musicians reacting to one another, experimenting, changing arrangements, and allowing unexpected ideas to become something new.

12

The Whole Purl

Purl wants to see what happens next. He wants to know what is around the corner, taste the weird thing, meet the stranger, hear the story, and find out why.

His cheerfulness does not make him innocent or childish. He can be perceptive, stubborn, and deeply serious when something matters to him. He can become genuinely angry when someone is cruel, hold a grudge, keep a secret, and make difficult decisions.

Curiosity is one of his defining traits, but it is not his entire personality. It is simply the thing that keeps drawing him toward the next person, place, question, or strange little object waiting to be discovered.
