RILEY

Noticing Problems Before They Exist Since Forever

A lanky, watchful American marten demi-human who thinks before he speaks, notices considerably more than he says, and can turn a perfectly ordinary noise into a mental list of possible mechanical failures. Riley is cautious, intelligent, easily overwhelmed, and quietly funny. The irritating part is that sometimes he is right.

Appearance

Face & Eyes

Riley has light human skin and a soft, somewhat tired face. His dark brown eyes are so deep in color they appear nearly black. They are alert and watchful, often darting toward unfamiliar sounds or movement before the rest of him reacts.

His expressions are subtle but readable once someone knows him. He often looks as though he is quietly working something out, because he usually is.

Build & Movement

Riley is lanky and narrow, with long limbs and a slightly awkward posture. His frame is angular, with prominent collarbones and lean, corded muscle in his arms and legs from constant restless movement.

He looks more comfortable moving quickly than standing confidently in one place. His skin is pale and sensitive, reacting quickly to temperature changes or touch, and often feels cooler than Renga's: smooth, taut over the bones, and sensitive to its surroundings.

Hair & Ears

His hair is soft, slightly messy, and kept at a practical length. It rarely stays perfectly arranged for long. Small, rounded marten ears covered in short fur sit naturally among his hair.

Clothing & Hardware

Riley favors practical touring clothes with pockets and room to move. He tends to layer pieces because he is never entirely sure whether the next location will be too hot, too cold, too crowded, or somehow all three.

An electric-blue carabiner is integrated into his clothing. It is distinctive to Riley rather than a shared band accessory.

The Tail · An Unreliable Privacy Setting

Riley has a long, full marten tail covered in dense fur. It is highly expressive despite his attempts to keep his emotions under control. He often touches it when nervous, whether as a small comfort or an unconscious outlet for restless energy.

Like the rest of Riley's body language, his tail can reveal what he is feeling before he has decided whether he wants to discuss it.

02
Thought Patterns / Anxiety

A Mind That Won't Clock Out

Think First. Then Think Again.

Riley thinks before he speaks. Sometimes he thinks for so long that he constructs what he considers the safest possible way to say something, only to eventually say the simplest version anyway.

He is cautious, not cowardly. He notices potential problems quickly and tends to scan unfamiliar environments, check exits, watch body language, and mentally prepare for things that might go wrong.

That can make him look nervous even when he is actually having a perfectly good time.

The Disaster Forecast

A strange noise means something may be broken. Whispering nearby makes him wonder whether he is being discussed. A weird sound from the touring van means he is already imagining a roadside breakdown.

The problem is that Riley is occasionally correct. Rather than teaching him to worry less, this has given his predictions an extremely unhelpful track record of being vindicated.

When the Hypothetical Becomes Real

Riley can become calmer once something actually goes wrong. A hypothetical disaster offers endless possibilities to worry about; a real problem has specific details, immediate needs, and something concrete to solve.

When there is an actual issue in front of him, his observation and analysis become useful. He can assess what happened, identify what needs attention, and quietly start fixing things instead of imagining every possible outcome.

03
Memory / Observation

Observant by Nature

Details Stick

Riley remembers conversations other people have forgotten. He catches inconsistencies, recognizes patterns, and notices small behavioral changes in people he knows. He may not ask about something immediately; he simply files the information away.

Days later, he might mention a habit that someone had not realized they were repeating. Riley has often been aware of it for a while.

Quiet Problem-Solving

He frequently fixes small problems before telling anyone they existed. He notices what has shifted, what sounds wrong, what has been misplaced, and what is likely to become an issue if nobody addresses it.

Riley doesn't always need recognition for noticing something. Sometimes he just wants the problem handled so everyone can get on with their day.

04
Dry Delivery / Accidental Comedy

Humor

Riley is funny in an extremely understated way. He rarely tells jokes in the conventional sense. Instead, he makes observations, sometimes waiting several seconds before saying something devastatingly accurate.

He can also say something completely ridiculous with a perfectly straight face, then look confused when everyone starts laughing. He was serious. Mostly.

Road Life / Routines

Life on Tour

Plan B.
And C.

Prepared for Something

Riley checks his pockets repeatedly, counts belongings before leaving somewhere, reads signs other people walk past, and keeps backup supplies. He adjusts his clothes when uncomfortable and watches exits in unfamiliar places.

New Places

Touring is fascinating and exhausting for Riley in roughly equal measure. He likes seeing new places, learning how different cities work, and finding strange little restaurants and shops. He dislikes not knowing where he is, sleeping somewhere unfamiliar, and losing track of his belongings.

Maps in His Head

Riley builds mental maps of unfamiliar places surprisingly quickly. He keeps track of routes, remembers where people are supposed to be, and notices when somebody is missing.

He is often the person who knows where everyone was last seen and how they were supposed to get where they were going.

Why He Does It

These habits are partly practical and partly the result of a mind that prefers knowing what is available before it needs anything. He likes clear plans, specific instructions, and the satisfying experience of everything working the way it was supposed to.

06
Affection / Consideration

Softness

Riley's affection is quiet. He remembers. He notices. He brings somebody the thing they mentioned wanting three weeks ago. He saves them a seat, checks whether they ate, and walks beside them instead of ahead.

If somebody he cares about is having a difficult night, he may stay awake with them even when he has to be up at an unreasonable hour the next morning. He does not necessarily say that he cares. He demonstrates it.

Small Acts of Care

His attention often shows up as practical consideration: remembering preferences, noticing discomfort, saving space, bringing something useful, or quietly making a difficult situation easier.

Comfortable Company

Riley likes quiet conversations and being able to sit beside someone without having to keep talking. He values people who let silence happen naturally and who don't make him feel that he must constantly explain himself.

Five People / One Very Loud Sound

GOOD TEETH

Riley · Bass

Electric blue / Low end

Riley is GOOD TEETH's bassist. His playing provides much of the band's emotional and harmonic gravity. The bass does not simply follow the guitar: it can deepen a bright, catchy section with an undercurrent of melancholy, reinforce a heavy passage, or lock closely with Purl's drums to give an arrangement its physical momentum.

His part can be restrained without being unimportant. A shift in the bass can change how an entire section feels, making something ridiculous sound unexpectedly sad or giving a vulnerable passage a firmer foundation.

GOOD TEETH's music is built through collaboration and contrast. Electronic production, atmospheric and technical guitar, heavy drums, bass, and Ives's wide-ranging vocals collide within individual songs. Riley's role is part of that shared construction, not a designated position as the sensible observer watching everyone else make bad decisions.

The Person Beneath the Overthinking

The Whole Riley

In summary · He heard that, too

Riley notices everything. He worries about half of it. He quietly fixes a quarter of it. And occasionally he is the only person in the room who noticed the other quarter was happening at all.

He is cautious, but not cowardly; thoughtful, but not passive; nervous, but not incapable. He can be curious, stubborn, petty, funny, angry, impulsive, and unexpectedly bold. His attention is not only a source of anxiety. It is also how he learns, solves problems, remembers people, and cares for them.
